Is a suitable tank mate for polypterus? I have see photos of tanks that mixed the two. I would be nervouse that the *****er would try to eat the streamers on the cats tail. I am setting up a 180 that I am going to combine my nine ten inch polypterus in till they out grow it. Is this cat a possible tank mate?

Thanks

i've had my 13" tigrinus with a 11" endlicheri with no problems.. although the tig has already eaten an 8" black ghost knife.. he's leaving the endlicheri alone, you would probably have difficulty in feeding though as my tig would usually out compete the endli with the food ;)

I have my 24" tig with 20+ bichirs (sized 11~22") in a 180 gal tank. The tig is pretty ok with tankmates. However, I feed it really well. So, feed it well, it might mostly ignore the rest.

what ever CDM say is the truth as he is the tig king and he knows all their is to know about tigrinus

My polypterus are about ten inches. If I got a smaller tig would it out grow my polypterus too quickly?

I got mine at less than a inch. It grew almost 1" per week in the first few months, and then 2" per month. It grew over 1ft in a year. I'm sure it'll outgrow the bichirs. On the other hand, the best way to keep the wisker of the tig is keeping it solo in a tank. I've eye witnessed an adult tig (a tig in a tank) with 1ft wiskers swinging gracefully, that's quite a scene.

Better check your math... At 1 in. per week for the first "few months" lets say a few is 3 thats 12 in. right there, then at 2 inches per month that leaves 9 months left that's another 18 in. brining the grand total to 30 in. in 1 yr. that's a big fish.

wow a 24" is fine with your bichers? thats awesome!

I would *never* trust a big mouthed fish like that with skinny lil bichers!!

I would not risk it.

The tiger grows a lot faster than the bichir, and one day, the bichir will disappear and the tiger will be really fat... That will happen, while You will be away two or three days and not feeding, or when You feed something, the tiger does not like.
