I’m getting an amazing deal on a 2 foot tigrinus shovelnose. Originally $1500, I’m getting him for $200. I’m really excited. He’ll be going into a 400 gallon pond with 2 gars and 2 peacock bass. Anything I should know about the tigrinus before I pick him up?

That's a stunning deal.

Have you done any homework? It's hard to find the motivation to type up a storm while supposing you may already know some or most of it.

400 gal is too tight IMHO for a 2' tig. They don't swim much but when they do, they need room.

Typical catfish - if a tank mate fits in its mouth, it's a risk.

There is some controversy around what feed may sicken or kill them. I'd stay away from any crustaceans.

If it was fed live, it will a challenge to wean off.

the store has had him for awhile and are trying to get him in a better home (the reason I’m getting him for so cheap) and the store has been feeding Talapia, silversides and I believe some shrimp. I do have plans to upgrade to a bigger pond in the future, but for right now, I believe this will be fine

Beautiful fish a little bit skinny but will be fine. I am the few that believes that tigrunis will be fine eating shrimp, tilapia and such with an exception of stuffing them full of massivore for other much need nutrients. But hey if you want I’ll take him for 250. :) you make 50 bucks and don’t have to stress

Agree - this fish has not been feeding adequately for some time, has to have been at least half a year or longer.

Hey, D., what's up with you wanting to get any fish you see on MFK lately? Have you got a windfall inheritance? Has your shrink recently cut your vitamin and supplement dosage? Does your wife know this? Someone needs to keep you in the cross-hairs, bro, before you get unglued ;)

Ahh this hobby is a drain to me keeps sucking all my time and money. Wifey has to somewhat deal with this sudden urge to spend due to her recent demands in materialistic things as well. And as far as a shrink goes I don’t think they understand this hobby haha no one does

What was suggested makes sense.

Dloks and for instance T1KARMAN have different experience with feeding shrimp to tigs, so I personally wouldn't gamble with feeding shrimp but many don't shy away from it.

If feeding fillets, they are poor in all respects but one - protein. Stuffing fillets with a quality pellet or soaking in Vitachem improves them.

My take may be debatable but I think feeding whole frozen-thawed fish is the best. If freshly and properly frozen, this feed should mimic their natural piscivorous diet the closest. I feed saltwater bait to my nine tigs. Some argue that even all saltwater stuff should be avoided. YMMV.

Of course, tigs natural prey are freshwater tropical fish, cichlids, etc., so these could offer a better nutritional value (if the said cichlids etc. were fed correctly with quality and diverse feed as they find in the wild - insects, plants, worms, etc. or at least a high quality pellet), but then the risk of pathogen transfer increases too with the freshwater versus saltwater diet.

One doesn't always know where they would win and where they would lose.
