Hey,
Well I've got yet another pair...crossing my fingers this time. I'd bought a pair about six months ago and they didn't last too long. For one, the male was atleast twice the female's size and secondly, I didn't have any others in the tank for him to chase. So lesson learned I'm trying again.
I picked up another male and female to add with my male about four days ago. My male is always coloured and is show quality...he won best West African Cichlid at our club show in March. I'd bought the pair at the show.
I knew the two new ones would get hammered by the male but I figured they were all the same size and could take it. Well the new male got pummeled. He's got some tail left but not much. The female did get some abuse as well but that changed when she starting to stand up to him.
Yesterday I noticed they were hanging out lots and she was showing off to him and nipping at him. Both are colouring up nicely now too with the dark black fins and blood red eyes. Very nice fish.
I've never spawned this fish so I'm hoping this is the start of their pair bond. I've got a 35-gallon breeder setup for them. It's got lots of plants for them to graze and algae covered driftwood.
Anyone ever kept these? They don't get too big...I think 3 or 4 inch is about max. They're one of the dwarf Tilapia from Lake Bermin.
Anyways, here's a pic of the pair. I love the white lip with the red and black. Super cool colouring!
Cheers,
Nick
