hi imgoing to set up a 40 g discus growout tank and i dont want to do 50% water changes a day but instead maybe 2 40% water changes a week since i only have time to change water wensdays and sundays since i got enough time to maintnance all my tanks so would tile for a discus tank be good because with rocks alot of sh#t stay inbetween it and i dont want my discus strees due to ammonia and i dont like the way bare bottom looks so i was going to put nice tile but with rocks bacteria can grow would bacteria be abe to grow on til;e since tile is a rockyer surface similiar to gravel by the way theres going to 4-6 2 inch discus and im running an emperor 400 the one rated for 100 gallons and i might be running a sponge filter rated for 60 gallons for extra biological filtration so does his all sound gewd or what do u reccomend for water changes and fedback thank u

You could always spray the bottom of the tank with a textured spray paint. It would look like their is substrate with nothing actually their. Then place some select rocks in the bottom for Depth and visual effect.

I wouldnt suggest this becuase tiles are very toxic. Maybe sand will be nice I put a net like cloth above the grave and when it is clean up time i simply take it out.

hmmmmmmm i forget who here had a tile bottom in her 180 for stingrays and other fish and i dont think she had problems so its a bad idea for substrate aaaaaand i cant paint tank its already been running

if you go to the stingray forum they will be able to tell which kind of tile is not a problem... certain kinds will mess with your PH... but most are fine... a lot of stingray keepers use tile bottoms with no problems... i have 2 buddies that have tiled tanks and have had for a long time now with no problems... one of them has discuses as well... so i know they would be fine... and i could be wrong but marble i think is the only type that messes with the water... all others should be fine... just check the stingray forum or ask on there... hope this helps

Is this true and what are the toxins?

i dont think you can actually keep a net on the bottom... where did this idea come from lol. try a litter box, that sounds more realistic

i know alot of guys that run bb reef tanks, but dont like the look use a product called starboard. come in many colors (sand being one) and can be trimmed to fit. the co name is king starboard. i do not have any personal exp with the product but so far it seems to be working for those i have seen using it. hth :)
