I currently have my tank in my apartment on carpet. I will be moving into a new house that is being built as I type this and it will have 20 inch tile throughout the bottom floor of the house where I plan to put the tank. I will be putting my 150tall on the tile and I was hoping to upgrade to something bigger at some point. Anything I should watch out for? The flooring is CRAZY expensive so I don't want to crack the tile or anything. When buying the time I made sure that it was as hard as I could get. Thanks Guys!

i think tile would be a better fit for a tank than carpet.. any leaks, spillage, or water changing mishaps you wont have to worry too much about. ive seen tanks on tile before, so im pretty sure tile wont crack under the weight of a tank because the weight should be distributed evenly. just my assumption.

I installed tiel for my 250 and I have about 25 gallons in the 55 g sump too.. I am not saying cracks are not possible... But like stated I am 25 gallons short of 300 on my tile floor :)

Hi there, you will not have any problems with tiles as long as your tile layer is laying your tiles properly, i.e. there are no voids beneath the tile. Tiles usually crack because they have voids or imperfections beneath them or they have a microfracture already when being laid and the extra stress of the load just increases this fracture. My whole house is tiled and I never had any problems. Nevertheless if you are worried you should try to spread the weight on the tile.

Hate to sound stuuupid, yea I know real shocker huh, but what do you mean spread the weight on the tile? A larger stand than the tank itself, there for displacing the weight over a greater surface, or am I even close?

Don't use a stand with feet, or single point sources of contact...put large pads under them to distribute the weight over the tile if this is what you have.

Talk to you tile people and let them know your intensions, and where exactly the tanks will be placed. If your stand has one long support at the bottom instead of feet, they need to make sure the tile is straight accross the tops atleast for the length/width of the tanks.

Personally, I would be there and have them show me it's level with a straight edge on the tile, they shouldn't mind doing this, that way it gets them out of the reponsibility of cracked tiles.

Oh, and since your building, don't forget to consider CHOMPERS water systems ;).

Pix, pix, pix...

Keep us posted.

I actually already went through with the tile guys with a level to ensure that the floor was good especially in the spot where I plan on putting the 150 now...And the 240-275 later...Everything looked good as far as I could see. My tank stand doesn't have any feet or anything so I dont have to worry about it putting pressure in some spot over others. I will just make sure that it is across as many tiles as possible to distribute the weight. Thanks for the help guys!

If it's porcelain tile you could park a car on it. It's strong. I am assuming you have a concrete subfloor.

if there are any voids in your tile the tile may crack. if the floor was properly installed, which 90% of the tile floors i see arent you wont have a problem.a good way to check is to take a key and tap on the middle of the tiles if they sound hollow they are not set correctly and will likley crack in time. if its mexican tile or marble i wouldnt put anything heavy on it if its porcelin or ceramic you will be ok probabally.
