Discovered this fish looking through West African biotope info on mongabay. Anyone ever kept one? Are they even available in the US?

(Again not my picture, just off of google images.)

They were quite common in Milwaukee and Chicago a decade ago, and I would see them often in LFSs, but not lately.
Jeff from Aquaiticclarity has access to many West African cichlids not often seen, and I believe he was breeding them for a while (may still be).
Or you may want to put an want ad in the Greater Chicago Cichlid Assn site if interested gcca.net
And if you go to Apistogramma.com, under the title West African, you will find a discussion about them on page 7 (I believe)

Someone had them a while back. I remember seeing them on lists. Was it Jeff Rapps? I considered getting some but Florida bans a lot of tilapia species, so I didn't chance it.

ETA: Maybe it wasn't Rapps. There were two sellers (Nebraska Cichlids and Tiedyman) on AquaBid who had them in January 2013, so that's probably where I saw them: http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/closed.cgi?view_archive_item&fwcichlidsw1357493414

If you want them, you may be able to contact them through AquaBid and see if they still work with the pairs.

Jeff at Aquatic Clarity also occasionally gets them in, but they have been rare everywhere for the last few years.
