I have 2 1400 gph hydor koralia powerheads in my 120 gal CA/SA tank, so far everything is good but I was wondering if there's any benefit on having one of them turn off at night? It would go on and off at the same time as the lights.

The idea is to give the fish a "break" from the strong current at night, and by changing the water circulation twice a day it would help me eliminate even more dead spots. Will the Cichlids mind the change? I know this is commonly done in reef setups but I don't know if freshwater fish are exposed to that kind of changes in the wild.

I can't imagine it making a difference one way or another.

I have a couple of friends that cycle their powerheads in their reef tanks to simulate tidal flows. That is a lot of water movement for your tank, while I argee water movement is important to elminate dead spots and help filtration I'm thinking two 1400's is a little over kill. So to answer your question yes I would at least turn one off for while if not eliminate it all together. Unless you're keeping some white water riverine species that requires very fast current.
