A customer left this guy at my lfs and it's stuffed into a 20 long that's 75% filled with plants. He's about 7" and has been in there for over a month and I'm tired of seeing him suffer so I've decided I'm gonna rescue him. Before I do I just want to find out which of my tanks he should be in, what to expect from size etc. Also, I know they're schooling fish so I would like to get him some companions. Obviously, to know all of this I need to know which of the two tinfoil barb species he is (redtail tinfoil or tinfoil). To me his head looks like a tinfoil barb but I keep reading that the tinfoils have distinct black lines on their tail, and this guy doesn't. Any help with the ID would be appreciated. I know the pic isn't great, but he doesn't move at all because he has nowhere to go in this tank.Barb - Edited.jpg

Appears to be altus. They are supposedly smaller growing than schwanenfeldi but I had 5 in the past that quickly reached 14". Fun fish.

There's two different species this one looks like the smaller one. One gets to 18" one to 12" I believe.

Yeah the redtail is the smaller one, most places I've seen the redtails get 8-10 inches and once in a while 12-14, whereas the regular tinfoils get 14"+. I'm just having trouble telling which this one is, I feel like he looks like a redtail with the face of a tinfoil. Either way I'm going tomorrow to save the poor dude

Yep it's an Altus, I have 6 of them between 10 & 12 inches, do better in groups, knh is spot on

Would this guy be a problem with 2" red tail barbs? I know they shouldn't be with tankmates that are too small, but they also like to be in groups and they're sold at about 2"

I have 2 around 9 inches thay seem to school with my silver dollars....i would try silver dollars if u cant find larger tonfoils
