My mom wants to put some nice non-goldfish fish in her pond outside and I suggested tinfoils. She really likes the idea; however, the only problem might be the cold in the winter. The info card at the pet shop says 72-84F, but it also says the same thing for paradise gouramis, which apparently my mom kept outside in Chicago when she was little and they survived.

so who knows how accurate those info cards are?

Anyway, does anyone know how cold-tolerant tinfoils are? And where exactly in Asia do they live?

you could always try hi fin sharks or channel cats. both can handle the cold...

How about some natives?

she could always move the fish inside when it starts getting cold outside but natives would probally be a better choice

Depends on how cold it gets where you live in the winter.

natives...

wow, another use for natives, gotta add that to my promotion speech

:D ... yeah, natives are the shibby... too bad I am just now learning that.

They can take a temp as low as 58 degrees F. My uncle keeps 3 regular and 6 albinos in his pond and they all do fine. He has had the water go as low as that, and they all do fine. Bala sharks and oscars work good to as he has two of each in his pond as well.

If you pond ends up going below that temp they will have to be brought inside. They will freeze to death if it get any colder. So if you get some, if it gets cold, just make sure you have a place to put them untill the water gets warmer.
