i have just bought a school of tin foils 12 of them at adout 6inch long ther in with a silver arrow 22inch 22inch giant gourami and a couple of large cat fish 20inch and a south american lung fish 18inch any tips on keeping tin foils any one out there who have a large tinfoil collection any advice will be helpfull

well, u will need a big tank for 12 13 inch very active swimming fish, they are just as easy to keep as any other barb, they will eat lots of your plants, they need loads of vegetable matter in their diet as well as a few meaty treats, you arow may struggle to get food as they will dart in and steal it you may need to start target feeding. Good luck

One thing I have learnt from keeping tin foil barbs in a monster community tank..they always would be the deemed vitim of other fish's attacks...reason somehow, is the darty way that they swim (attracts attention of other predatory fishes) and also their ever so shiny scales is always a target of attack esp from Arowanas...

I have given up keeping them altogether... :(

Lots of open water for them would be good. They're very active swimmers. In my experience they rarely jump but when they panic they can really fly. Lots of room allows them to school, which can be quite spectacular (though it's not as tight a school as other barbs). And yes, if you have a planted tank, they will create the open water for themselves by eating all the plants.

Tinfoils are somewhat slow growers so you have time to upgrade
your tank.

Tinfoils grow plenty quick. They'll double in size in the next year. As long as he has an adequately sized tank for that Giant Gourami, it'll be plenty big for the barbs.

My tins are keeping pace with my pacu so I would say they grow very quickly. I enjoy them but as said above, they tend to draw attacks from others. My giant gourami was very peacefull except towards the tins. Also, they are extremely quick eaters and tend to eat pellets etc. before my other fish have a chance. All that being said, I enjoy them very much and wouldn't mind picking up 1-2 more.

12 tinfoils in one tank huh? the way these guys like to move around id only want to keep 12 in a 10 ft tank persoanlly especially with an already large collection. i think they make great tank mates with oscars as they will pick at food debris in the water that oscars drop. to be honest id keep 4 and return the rest. did the fish shop owner try to even warn you about the size these fish would get in time?
