Some of my fish have these black kind of dots on them. They are healthy and swimming actively and eating like crazy but I am concerned what this thing is and what shall I need to do. They are not on fins like white spot happens. Some fish have them on there skin only.

I have Seachem Paraguard in my emergency stock but I don't know what this thing on fish is and what shall I do to treat.

Please Help.

IMO the black spots are not anything to worry about so no need for medications. They could be melanin spots, poorly bred/hybrid, or maybe even pond raised fish that were exposed to a parasite carried by fish eating birds.

Agree. Don’t look like much maybe just some color.

I don't think this is what you are seeing on your fish, I personally think that Dee is correct, but just an FYI if it turns out to get worse.

What Duane is referring to is known as black spot disease, and it actually can cause stress and possibly infection in an otherwise healthy aquarium fish.

The disease is spread by birds, and carried by snails. In freshwater fish there is no real treatment, you have to simply wait it out & make sure that the cycle cannot repeat itself. (do not keep snails with infected fish)

The "Noga" mentioned in the excerpt below would be Dr. Edward J. Noga, MS, DVM, a highly respected professor of aquatic medicine and immunology, that has been published approx 150 times in related papers/journals. His lab at NC State University specializes in the study of infectious diseases of finfish and shellfish.

According to Noga, if the fish has "black spot disease" there is no OTC treatment for the metacercaria (which are not in themselves lethal). They will simply "come out" of the cysts.

If there are no snails or copepods around, that is the end of the line. However, while the metacercaria are there, they can cause an immune reaction, which can be hard on the fish. If/when the metacercaria come out, they leave behind a hole that can get infected with bacteria and/or bleed. That is a danger to the fish. Salt in the water helps healing and increases production of the slime coat. Frequent water changes dilute out any possible infectious bacteria and supports the immune system. The key for fish survival (if they do not bleed to death from the holes) is a good immune system.

Black Spot is due to the metacercarian stage of a parasite with a complex life cycle called a "digenean" trematode . The "black spot" is caused by the metacercaria encysted under the skin which irritates the melanocytes of the fish tissue, causing the dark spot.

As long as it is under the skin, it is impervious from outside.

Personally I would pass.

Thanks a lot. The problem is that I can swear that the fish didn't have it when I bought them. They affected only the yellow color fish. I very carefully examined other fish but none have them. Only the yellow lab have some and some other hybrid yellow color fish have them.

So I am suspecting its contagious? I read the article RD posted and read more about it online. However I am little confused if it is actually the black spot disease or something else. As I initially said the infected fish are fine but today I started to notice some of them being lazy and staying in one place which wasn't the case before. One of the yellow lab is hidden under one hiding spot for hours. The one on the right side looks dyeing but she swims a little and then rest like that. On the left yellow lab under the bottom cover is stayinh for hours like this. Came out at feeding time but went back again.

Basically this black thing is only present on yellow color fish I have. I am very worried. Don't know what to do really.

After viewing your video, I think you have something else going on whether it be an aggression issue or a water quality issue. Aggression should be noticed by the appearance of fish damage or fish seeking exits usually near the top of the tank. Water testing should provide info on ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

I eas just about to makr the same comment on this. Sure we dont have a tank devil in there ? Could be a battle tank with the lights off. Do these spots come unstuck with a bit of a rub ?

Yeah man, that does not look good at all.

I haven't seen anything about water parameters being questioned. Sort of doubt it is black spot disease.
Could be a reaction (black specks/ coloring) to the fish being stressed by ammonia/ nitrates or a disease. Video definitely shows the stress.
Are these new fish that exhibit this? Possibly infected with something.
Quarantine or euthanize.
