I caught a very small yellow bullhead catfish in my minnow trap. I would very much like to keep him, but for now putting him in my 55 gallon with the 10" yellow bullhead is out of the question.. I have a 1 gallon with undergravel filter, will this small of a tank stunt his growth if I put him in it momentarily? Also what would be the best food source for this small (about 1 1/2") of a catfish? I never fed the catfish I own until he was large enough to eat algae discs, he just lived under a rock for like a year before I even knew he was still in there. Now he eats minnows and crayfish. Should I just crumble up some algae discs?

Algae disks, shrimp pellets, chopped worms, shrimp, bloodworms...they aren't picky. I would say a 1g is out of the question though, you need a growout tank for the bullhead and a 1g just won't cut it. Either the fish will get stunted and perhaps die or you'll clean the tank daily and it will outgrow it in virtually no time at all. Honestly a 55g probably won't work for two bullheads anyway. Not only are they large but they're usually territorial.

I got some shrimp pellets and a tupperware temp tank today.. Thanks for the advice!

Bullheads are difficult to sex, I don't know how to do it myself. I wouldn't bank I figuring it out any time soon.

That's true, but in captivity they may never get triggered into breeding mode. Ictalurids are difficult to breed in aquaria. I've had my bullhead for about four years now and I have no idea what sex it is. I suppose there may be a method to vent them, never tried to find out.

There has to be some sort of substrate or artificial burrow to be used?!?
