I am going to be helping my sister convert her 180 gallon saltwater tank into a freshwater tank. has anyone ever done this or at least have any suggestions? How difficult of a task is this? She has a large sump style filter which i dont have much experience with but im sure it would work for freshwater.

First off why would you want to go back to Fresh?? That doesn't make sense to me, Saltwater is so much more interesting than fresh to me. but to each his own i guess...
Ummm, you will not have to do anything different as far as I know. Just don't add salt to the water and if there is a Protein Skimmer it won't work with Freshwater.
What is the tanks status right now? I'm guess it still has water in it that you want to reuse...

the tank is still setup saltwater. nothing has been done to it yet as far as i know. i didnt think you would be able to reuse any of the water. i assumed the tank would just have to be refilled and cycled like a new tank.
its gonna be a pain to make that tank fresh. youre gonna have to take out all the filter material and trash it. buy bioballs or something and fill it with that. youll have to clean the salt from the pumps if possible, dont worry about the salt though.

just rinse mechanical and biomedia well with fresh water and its good to go
as for the pump the salt will wash right off
Yup a little extra salt isnt going to hurt anything, and if you were keeping african cichlids you could probably reuses a tiny bit of the water. Just drain it, rinse the media, and fill it back up again.
Just don't do it. That's the easiest way
