I have been looking for Synspilum for a long time and tonight I found some in Calgary while on a business trip. They are about 1-1/2" and look healthy. This would be my first time for these guys and am wondering if there is anything special I should watch for? Too small to sex and not much for color yet but I know their potential. Thanks for any tips you may have.

at that size not really much to look for. I'd probably try to find the biggest of the tank and go for that one. You going for just one or going to get a few and try to get a pair?

I thought I would get a few as they will be in a 110gal tank. If they pair up great and if not I would like to at least get a male that could be the showcase in the years to come.

Your best bet at that size would be to find where they came from. If you can see a picture of the parents. If they came from Jeff Rapps then you know they will look great. The ones he's been selling are beautiful.

Best thing to do is get a few, pick the most active and largest ones in the tank, ask if you can see them eat(best appetite wins)also look at fins which ones had good fins, shredded fins mean they are the ones getting picked on ,and always look for the ones that keep their fins open alot(closed fins not good most off the time). I have quite a few synspilums great fish on of my favorites, tip pairs are better in my experience males look great solo but you can beat the colors of a pair.

True Synspilus have blue eyes and are completly black when they're young.

Really? Here is a copy of a picture from the internet which shows a juvenile Synspilum. I have found several sites that have pictures that look like this one. This is also what the syns at the LFS look like.

They grant three wishes too, but only if you best them in a feat of wit.

The photo you posted looks just like juvenile synspilum, but it also looks just like a bunch of other small Vieja/Paratheraps species which is the issue.

I have never had a black synspilum,if they are black i would suspect they are something else.
