Tips on keeping gar ???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Dude, there is a Gar section over here. I'm sure there are people there with experiences.
I would recommand asking advice from experts such as xander & E_americanus.
If it is your first time keeping gars, go for Florida gars. They are beginner gars (sort of)

Well, I have two Alligator Gar in my tank currently and I've had them for a little under a year but they are actually very easy to keep and are much more entertaining than a documentary would suggest. All that I have really done was made sure the PH stayed good, added flora and a drift log. I have housed with them 1x Shovelnose Catfish, 1x Largemouth Bass, 2x Channel Catfish, 2x Black Crappie, 4x Sunfish(Bream), 2x Plecostomas, and about 6x Crayfish. All of my fish get along very well and are fed shrimp pellets, smaller crayfish caught from my creek, minnows(both wild and storebought), algae tablets, small bream caught during minnow harvest, and occasional worms/goldfish. I have white/brown pebbles as a substrate along with a few rocks that have been found from our creek. The tank has a full bubble wall in the back, a heater, and an undergravel filtering system. My tank is 48" left to right, 32" back to front, 50" left front to right front(bowfront), 23" tall(I'd tell you how many that is in gallons but I can't for the life of me remember how to convert cubic inches to gallons. I really hope this helps. Good luck finding any better advice!

Your always on the ball when it comes to gar legality. I really should learn where my favorite group of fish can't be kept.

I'm on the ball when it comes to gar legality because I want to keep people from potentially getting in trouble as well as making sure that the various government agencies know that we don't condone keeping certain fishes illegally.

Now with that being said, it seems like 99% of the threads that I bring the legality thing up in deal with an OP from California, so I tend to look at a poster's location before choosing to answer their question about caring for/acquiring a gar or point out the illegality of keeping true gars where they live. In the case of California, tons of LFS's sell gars illegally, so most people don't realize that gars are illegal to keep there. I do feel bad about kind of crushing their dreams of owning a gar, but I would rather do that than let them get the gar and then have it confiscated.
