What are some things to look for when getting a FH when they still juvies (around 2" or so)? How do you tell if a FH has potential for a decent grade and if its a male or a female? I was going to get my first FH today but the big male my LFS had was sold before I got there, the other two were in terrible condition from the larger abusing them. I was told they would get another on Thursday. I really want a FH but I want to make an informed choice and get a good grade fish.

If you haven't been trained to tell the difference between a potential kokster and dud then it's going to be hard. Here's some tips I can give you though, pick the biggest ones. Those are usually males. Look for larger ones that have a bit of a raised forehead. If you can't decide between few of them, best bet would be to get all/most of them. If you look at fry that are 3", you should be able to tell since the koksters should have developed a water kok by now. Keep in mind that this advice is for ZZ's and not kamfas.

ask to see the parents if possible or a pic of them. Genes go a long way
