Hi all, I have about 40 electric Blue Acara fry that are about 2 months old and I feel like they're on a standstill. I'm feeding them either first bites and baby brine shrimp twice a day. Is there anything else that I can feed them that would speed up their growth and when can I move them to a growout tank with a backpack filter?

Daily water changes will speed up growth.
Also, 40 fry is a lot. What size tank do you have them in.. A bigger tank will speed up growth once the fry get to a certain size.. If they are in an undersized tank, water change as much as possible, maybe even more than once a day.

Also, see if the fry will eat something larger than baby brine shrimp.
See if their bellies are stuffed after feeding.

Good luck.

I agree, Clean water and full bellies. If you have a larger tank ready, go ahead and move them. I also agree with paulW if you can get them to eat some larger foods that will help.

I have some EBA fry also and im dealing with the same thing. I have been crushing up some cichlid gold and chopping some frozen blood worms. This has really boosted their growth for me.

Thanks so much for the feedback....you said that I can move them to a bigger tank....they're in a 10 gallon tank right now with a sponge filter and heater....so you think I can move them to a new tank with a backpack filter at this point? I also have another set of fry that are about a month old in another 10 gallon tank....can I now combine the two in a bigger tank with a better filter?

Good luck.

Thanks so much for the feedback, I actually feed the parents cichlid gold and didn't think about giving it to the fry....do you just sprinkle the crumbs on the top of the water or do you mix it with water and feed with a syringe? I am still feeding with a syringe but would like to stop if possible!

I just drop some in the tank and kind of swish it around to make some start to sink so they can all feed. I have noticed some of the fry will feed from the surface but most will not.

I agree about the water changes, and I try to feed as many small feedings per day as possible 5 or more really help, and pureed pellets and thawed peas, in a little tank water shot into the fry school also helps stimulate a feeding response. I also try to cultivate as much algae as possible in fry tanks.

isde02 isde02 made me a firm believer of this.:)

Thanks so much for the feedback,

You asked about moving them to a larger tank.. Yes, do it.
I would just keep the same sponge filter that you are using in the 10 gallon. It is already cycled and working for you.
Without seeing the fry, I do not know if a hang on the back filter would work or not. You have to use your own judgement about whether they would be safe or not.. I would be cautious though... In general though, sponge filters are the best for fry.
