Hey all!!! Been reading a while, first post
So, first off my tank is this:
-2 Plecos, in the 4" range
-3 goldfish, in the 2-3" range
-1 tire track eel, in the 7-8" range
My original plan was to get a tire track eel and Discus, since I think Discus are really beautiful and are supposed to be interactive. However in my searches they are really expensive, hard to find, and seem to be rather frail, so I went for pretty much the cheapest and hardiest fish you can buy - goldfish (of the fancy variety). Everyone seems to be getting along for the most part, but there was a circular bruise around my goldfish's eye about the size of my plecos mouth, but it went away and hasn't happened since (tank is a little over a month old). All fish are active and healthy, well healthy at least the tire track hides all day
My first question is about temperature. Goldfish like it colder, and they like seasons where you have temperature fluctuations (from what I've read). Right now I have it at 75F, which is about as hot as goldfish are happy and mid-range for the eel. Can eels tolerate colder water for a few months? How cold? How would I know if he was cold?
My second is about feeding the tire track. I have been using either mealworms or frozen bloodworms and he seems happy with both, but the amount varies a TON. I have been feeding twice a day, usually 3-4 mealworms or a cube of frozen bloodworms. Sometimes he gobbles it all up right away, sometimes he doesn't touch it at all. Would that be more likely he is not hungry, not wanting that type of food, or shy? How do you know how much is enough? Sometimes I have left a few worms in front of him and he doesn't eat at thetime, but an hour later they are gone. It is much more obvious how much to feed goldfish, they gobble up anything you put in there for 1-2 minutes then just kinda swim away and stop eating.
And finally growth rate, both for the tire track and for the goldfish. I figure the 90 is borderline for a full grown eel (only because they don't move much), but eventually I want 3-4 more goldfish (to fill out the color spectrum) and when those are 6-8" it'll be too full in the tank. So I plan on upgrading to a 200-300 gallon tank that point (I don't mind the space or money or time, I just didn't want my first tank to be that big). How long will it take the eel to get from 7" to 2'? How about a goldfish from 2" to 8"?
Thanks for reading!!
