I know this has probably been discussed ad nauseam, but, for what it's worth I'll post this in case someone read's it and it helps them (I hope it does). I've been housing my tire track, Loki, in my tank at work. All was going well, lots of food (he was eating live, got moved to my work tank after showing aggression in my "freaks" tank at home towards smaller fish). I didn't want to give up on this little guy because he had more aggressive instincts and was planning on housing him in a larger tank as the main focus as he grew, and had him in a 36 grow out at work. I came in to work and Loki jumped out at the auto feeder, which I had in there for other fish that previously were in that tank, and I very, very foolishly did not cover.
It was not a big hole, but Loki was only about 6-7 inches and thin, sadly (very), he didn't make it. I had done all the research on these guys, food, parameters, tank mates, etc, but, I didn't realize how stubborn they are for escaping and own my mistake, but hope I can at least help another keeper learn from my lesson.
So, on the off chance a newer owner of these awesome little guys reads this, please, learn from my mistake. Cover all those holes up top, and if the eel is large, and you have a thin cover, weight it, sponge your filter intake, and use a canister if you can to avoid them jumping off the hob.
Rest in piece my little bud, I will miss you.
