tire track in a 55 gallon? how long?

iv been reading up on these guys and some of the ppl on here that have them have mentioned that while something massive like a 180 gallon would be nice it is reasonable to keep one of these in a 75 gallon. one member even thought that his is so flexible it probably would even be fine in a 12" wide tank with little problems even though it is over 2' at the moment. thoughts? iv got an empty 55 gallon right now. im tempted to use it if i can get away with not having to upgrade within a year and a half (i would buy the eel at about 5" so that should give it some time to grow before it would need to be moved and it sounds like it would take one about a year and a half to get big enough to need to be moved.) ... im assuming that growing one out from ~5" it takes about a year and a half to reach 1.5'.

so i guess the important questions with helping me decide wether or not to get one is 1. how long can i keep one in a 55 gallon before upgrading/ what size should i ugrade at; and 2. what kind of upgrade should i look at getting at that point? (the eel would have the tank to itself apart from the possible feeder)
 
mine did not grow that fast but he did go from a 40 to a 55 soon to be 75 and he is about 2 foot now but kept by himself or herself.
 
thanks, i saw one at a lfs today. makes me rethink my rethinking. such a cool pet. i really want one.
 
mine has maybe, maybe grown like 3 inches in 3-4 months, he's still under a foot, even at a foot he wouldn't be that big, he rarely comes out of hiding while i am in the room :P, so i'd say go for it in the 55 just give him some good hiding places
 
mine didnt grow to fast... started at 4in in my 55 gal for more than a year. if its the only fish in the tank, the eel would be fine for good amount of time.
