Anybody see any issues with putting a like-sized tiretrack in with a senegal bichir? My local Petsmart is having a sale on them... they've got a bunch that are already 8"+....

And they both eat the same kind of food, so that kind of kills two birds with one stone. I think that since I have sand, the tiretrack should LOVE that, too. I just wanted to make sure that there wouldn't be any eye-pecking or anything like that going on...

I'm just now finally starting to understand why people keep so many fish tanks... there are just SOOOOOOOOO many kick@ss fish out there!

Do... do ALL of them get so big (36"?) I just wonder if it's going to get too big for my current tank within the next 6 months (will be buying a larger tank soon). Is there a more realistic estimate for their max size? Or is 30"+ pretty much a good estimate?

If it is really a tiretrack eel, then yes, it will get 3 feet long or so. If it's been mis-labled and is actually one of the smaller spiny eels like zig-zag or Zebra eels, then they should only reach 18"-24". We'd need a good clear picture of it to tell.

And as for needing more tanks for more cool fish... Oh yeah! I have 5 tanks in my livingroom right now with various tropicals, and I'm expanding to african cichlids in the next month or so, and Have plans to set up a birchir tank (with eels if I can get them, too!) over the summer. For an expensive hobby, Aquaria is way, way too addictive.

I wonder if there's a price/wattage rating for aquarium heaters somewhere out there... lol

Not really, because it's going to depend a lot on the manufacturer. I can get a little 50 watt hagen heater for like $12, but I prefer Ebo Jager heaters, and a 50 watt one costs closer to $20. There are sites that have how many watts you need per gallon (I believe 5 watts per gallon is standard, but 2-3 will get you by), but the manufacturers are the ones that control the price.

No... I think you misunderstood me... i was talking about finding out how much the electricity would cost per unit of wattage in the heater (aka: a 50 watt heater would add $2 to your electricity bill per month). Hopefully that is more clear... course now that I think about it, it would vary with your utility company and how much their charging per watt/kilowatt... oh well.

ive got a 7" tiretrack eel right now and all he will eat are ghost shrimp, does anyone have any ideas on what else to feed him? he wont eat feeder fish, beefhearts, bloodworms, shrimp pellets, or any find of live worms ive tried. we're thinking about putting him in a 55g with an albino senegal bichir until he gets bigger, the concern is that he wont get anything to eat because the bichir would eat the ghost shrimp before the tiretrack would even get to them. he hides all of the time.
