tiretrack eel buring up

I have a ft long tire track eel and he is a really interesting fish. He has awesome markings but he is always buried. He buries up for days at a time. He has plenty of hiding places. I thought he might not like the bright lite so i blacked out one corner of the tank. I would like to know some tricks to keep him out of the gravel so i can enjoy his good looks. FRUSTRATING

It's in there nature that's just what they do best. The only way you can stop him is have a bare bottom tank or just a very small amount of gravel. Does he come out at noght though?
