Anyone have one that they've been running for awhile? I emailed Finnex & Via Aqua today & both are made in China & only have 180 day warranties, so I'm a llittle apprehensive of getting one of those. Just wanted to see what others are running. Thanks for the help!

I've heard about them malfunctioning more than other heaters minus Marineland. The I went jag myself and one it

Questions:
1. Why do you want to use titanium versus glass?
2. How many watts are you planning to use?

I am currently running (6) 300W Eheim Jagers (1,800W total) on a Ranco temperature controller. The Jagers have a few benefits over the titanium heaters:
1. I can set an upper limit on each individual heater unit- In the event that my temperature controller fails ("sticks on"), the internal thermostat on each of the Jagers will shut the heaters off at the temp that I set (84F). This reduces the chances of my fish being cooked.
2. Less wattage running through each heating unit. A 1,000W titanium heating rod will get really hot (much smaller surface area to dispurse 1,000W of energy versus spread over multiple Jagers); this can lead to a higher likelihood of failure/catastrophe. The Eheims have a safety shutoff feature if run dry, whereas the titaniums do not.
3. Flexibility: I can add/remove heaters in 300W increments, whereas with a 1,000W does not give you that ability.
4. If one Jager fails, it's not the end of the world. If one larger titanium unit fails, you better have a backup on hand.

To be fair, here are the cons to using multiple Eheims:
1. Rats nest of wires: I have to use power strips to handle all the plugs.
2. You must have enough space in your sump for all the heaters.

Cost per watt of heater is about the same, so there is no advantage to either one there, but the Jagers have features that the titanium rods do not.

I would go with multiple Jagers controlled by a Ranco.

Titanium doesn't shatter either...

...I don't know about that...according to MFK member Wet Whiskers she has "blown up two 'titanium' heaters." When I was asking around about heaters, she said titanium heaters "have glass plugs that shoot out all over your sump when they fail." I think people hear the word titanium and think they are indestructible, but that's not the case. From what I understand they are just wrapped in a thin layer of titanium and are not a solid titanium rod and are just as likely to break as glass. I'm not saying they are bad, but I'm not sold on them being better than glass heaters.
