MY AFRICAN TIGER PIKE (HEPTUS ODUS) probadly misspelled but anyway, he scarred himself one night and when i woke up he was upside down at the bottom of the tank like he knocked himself dizzy, i have saved him before but nothing is working now, it has been a week and he still is upside down on the bottom trying to fight for life, his equilbribium is all messed up and no matter how many time i hold him straight or he tries to swim he just ends up flopping back down to the bottom on his back. should i just take him out of his misery or keep trying to fix him, the plecos are starting to try and nibble on him and today i saw my ornate bicher grab him by the tail and tried to swing him around. i have had this fish for over a year and a half and grew it from 3"'s to a whopping 14"s right now, would hate to lose him but i might have to do a mercy killing so what would be the best way if i have to go that route. p.s. thanks for any advice in advance!!!:(:irked:

dont mercy kill it, who knows it might snap out of it, its better then just MErking your fish.

i would let him toughen it out. keep the water clean and see what happens

LOL everybody is helping EXCEPT the mods

Just because they are mods, doesn't mean they know any more than the rest of us ;)

Is he eating? I had a +12" odoe that did extactly the same thing. He did right himself but it never recovered fully (swam very oddly) and never ate again. I was surprised it lasted so long without eating anything. I euthanised it in the end.

The membership here is top notch, you don't need a mod to get good advice.

To be down for that long he obviously did some serious internal damage, so the long-term prognosis is not promising. Your best bet is to move him to a quarantine tank where nothing can gnaw on him and complicate any rehab. Outside of that & pristine water, there is little you can do.

Sometimes fish just don't cooperate with our best intentions, though. If you choose to mercy kill him, using alka-seltzer will work, as will freezing or an overdose of clove oil.

it does sound like a swim bladder issue, i had a bass do the same and it never recovered and looked pityfull so i put it out of its misery.

sorry folks died yesterday when i got not breathing and stiff as a board. in the freezer will get it taxidermied and try to keep the skull with the teeth. add insult to injury lfs has three neww african tiger pikes 4-6"'s for $30 each i want all three but will not get one for quite awhile and thanks for yall help.
