Home of the brave.
This is a topic of much debate and I figured that I would share my recent experience.

I was using aquarium salt for general fish health for quite some time. After reading several posts on this debate I decided to stop using it.

Now we all know that Gold saums seem to have problems with white stringy poop, sunken belly, and loss of appetite.

Bam! GS gets the symtoms and now Im thinking I have to treat my 180g community with prazi pro and since I didnt have any i had to order online.

As im waiting for the meds I decide to go purchase some aquarium salt and added it to the tank once again.

Bam! with in 5 hours Marley is eating again, white poop is gone and all fish seem to be more lively. He is 10-11 inches.

Thanks for reading!

I have some salt in all my fresh water tanks. I started using it when the fish in my 30 were showing signs of Ich. Then started adding some to all my tanks when doing water changes.
I did a brine dip on a beat up 3" Buttakoferri last night, he wasn't looking good and was near dead. I separated it from the other fish and thought surely it would be dead this morning. It's still hanging in there and is looking better. Had I done nothing it would have died last night.

I met a guy who had a JDM 265 with mostly large SA Cichlids, there were at least 75 fish in there. He uses salt, all his fish are very healthy and vibrantly coloured. Some of the fish are 6 years old. He uses salt in his tank.

Several of the LFS I've been to use salt in their fresh systems.

It's been years since I routinely added salt to my systems. but I am on well and teh water is put threw a softening system first. So they do get some salt. My plants don't seem affected by it either, so I'm imagining it's very low levels. TBH i don't think i even have salt sitting around for my tanks anymore, and if I do.. well that tells ya how often I have to use it.

i just started adding salt during my weekly waterchanges, i noticed right away the general health of my fish improved.

heres a list of the fish:

48X24X24'' 120 Gallon.
5 X 6'' silver dollars.
1 X 8'' senegalus.
1 X 8'' palmas polli.
1 X 8'' L-152 Pineapple.
1 X 8'' flag tail.
1 X 8'' Tiger Oscar
1 X 8'' Green Terror

my green terror has HITH and salt has really helped it recover!

i would not add salt as frequently if the tank was made up of scaleless fish.

I add salt when there are injuries on a fish or something of that nature, but don't have it in the tank at all times though.
