This seems like a good place to ask this question. I am looking at buying a 180gal aquarium. Problem is it has been in this guys storage shed for abou 2 years. I went and looked at it. But Because of the heat the silicone has started rotting/deteriorating. So I believe it all would have to be replaced. Just wondering if anyone has done this and what's the risk in replacing it other than the obvious. Tank is fairly old. Worth taking the risk or not thanks

If its cheap then re seal it cause the glass will still be good.
Its a bit of elbow grease.

How much is he asking?

Thanks for the info. Here is the deal. He was asking 800 for tank custom stand lights about 100ibs of gravel and two ehiem filters. Believe the filters are pro II. So they are an older version. Here are my thoughts all feed back is appreciated. Good or Bad. The filters and lights are questionable. The lights are the ones with the ballast inline with the plug. The filters at a minimum will need new o rings and maybe impellers. The stand was made of pine so some of the doors are starting to warp. The tank other than the silicone has a few minor scratches in it typical for the age. I believe the tank is a few years old. I wAs going to offer around 400 and go no higher than 500. There is no top just the lights. Thoughts?

no clue what tanks are worth there but I wouldn't be paying anymore then 500$ for a 6x2x2 second hand in good condition. Brand new id be expecting around 800-1000.

I think resealing smaller tanks (under 220g) is quite easy pending its the seal inside the tank that needs replacing, if the outer seal is going its a real pita and can be costly. just cut the old inner seal of with sharp razors, the fresher the razor the better it will remove the silicone, you also must insure the slimy looking stuff is removed with razors or scrubbing.

Then I would clean all the areas with methylated spirits and dry it off with paper towels ( try to avoid getting to much on the outer silicone seal ), add some duct tape around the seams to keep them clean. Apply the silicone then you run your finger over it or the end of a pipe etc adding a bit of pressure as you want to push it right up against the outer seal but no so much you push it out the sides of finger, I think this is the hardest part and a bit hard to explain, If you want it to look clean id suggest practicing on a smaller tank or something.

Hope this helps.
