i am getting a 55 gallon salt water fish tank tomorrow and to not make the same mistake i did last time wasting a lot of money give me advice on cycling my 50 gallon :feedback:

If you don't want to risk losing any fish, just throw a peice of raw shrimp in the tank. Let it decompose, and wait a few weeks.

LiveRock will help your tank stabilize as well..

Go buy a test kit or go to petco , I THINK they to free water test

I know PetsMart does free water tests.

should i put live rock, live sand into the tank and add the 1-2 raw shrimp or wait

If $ is no object then put 50 to 75 lb of live rock in there and a couple of inches of live sand . just make sure the rock is "cured " before you add any livestock or it'll be a big mess.something else you can use is Hagen's Cycle . I cycled a 55g with this in lke a week with 5 various damsels. my ammonia never went up , my nitrites never went up, just went straight to nitrate. I fed lightly twice a day, and added the cycle at the recommended weekly dosage DAILY. you could also do the sme thing with a couple of pieces of shrimp or acclimate black mollies slowly to salt water and just throw in a predator when the cycle is complete to get rid of the mollies.

If it's going to be a FWLR tank you will need min of 55lbs of live rock and three 20lbs bag's of live sand. With cured rock you can have your tank cycled 3-10 day's. If it's un-cured the tank will be cycled in about 2-3 weeks. If you wish to do a reef tank then you will be looking at the same amount of LR but two more bag's of live sand(reef tank's should always have a very big sand bed). If you got any question's or if anyone has any question's for me feel free to aim me at DJ DEAF TONE.
