so, one of the members here has an RTC that I was planning on getting for my 1200. I love rtc's, but I know they get HUGE! I have personally seen them over 5ft in length at our local public aquarium. I also want to keep oscars, and I think at some point the rtc would see them as lunch right? So, should I get the RTC or not? I'm not sure the fate of the fish if I don't. I think he's been trying to get rid of him for a while. He's a nice looking fish at about 10".

if your going to keep oscars i wouldn't get one
but i agree he would look awesome in there
grow him out and the donate him to a zoo or something like that maybe

If I had the tank space I would definately get an RTC. I would not waste all that tank space for O's, even though they are cool fish, you could easily buy a far smaller tank for them and have the best of both worlds.

I would definately go for it. The dont get as big as everyone claims, and i've had some that wouldnt grow over 30". My largest was a 8 years old and 36" and wouldnt eat any of his tankmates. I even had small sevrums with him and he never touched em :screwy: . You never know because all RTC's behave differently, but i'd give him a try. 1200 gallons should be big enough for the Oscars to hide . MAYBE.

awesome fish, great responsibilty... I saw this fish busted a 100 gallon tank...I used to have one before, they have a good appetite

If your gonna do a 1200g tank I dont see a problem. Ive seen a RTC in what must be a 10x5x4 tank and hes just fine. The O's may become lunch but if the rtc is only 10inchs at the moment I would look check your lfs to find some large hand in O's that would not be eaten by the rtc, by the time they are fully grown i think they would be ok. Why not think about a couple of Pacu for that tank too, they would fit just fine in to a set up like that.

I would go for it. If you can house an RTC for the long haul, they are one of the most beautiful catfish to keep. It would be well worth it.

what is a RTC lol I read the whole thread hoping someone would call it by actual name lol what does RTC stand for

I would get the Red Tailed Catfish for sure:headbang2 wizzin and i do think that 1200 gals will be enough room for the O's to hide.
