Should i try and aim to start a petshop with a mate? Were both 18, id have fish and he'd have reptiles. We are in Britain. Were both very determined to do this also but what do other people reckon?

Same answer as I always give. No; go to school. University I think you guys call it, since I think your college is the same as our high school.

at that age it would be a bit difficult. AT ur age u have to remember there will be living animals depending on u at the shop , so whn u might want to go party or not open one day or go away for a long weeknd the animals still need to be fed and taken care of. just a thought. Its very hard not only becuase of the stress of successfuly managing a business but the money issue to begin.

i have a friend who owns a fish store he says

if you want to make money dont make a pet store
if you want to go to work without actually working open a pet store

at least take some coarse's in buisness

Id say no...

I work in the trade and i work for a relitively new shop weve been going now for around 15 months, and the amount of effort that is required, it really isnt as easy as you think.

In your first year its very hard to get contacts for fish and gear. Most people dont want to offer their trade to you due to the risk of the shop closing it really isnt as easy as youd think.

My advice to you:
1. Rather go to uni and enjoy it doing a useful degree or a degree that could help you in your intended line of work, i.e. marine biology, business management, biology etc.

2: While studying this, get a part time job at a place like a pet shop, animal shelter or anywhere that deals with animals sick and healthy 24h. Not open 24H, but have to look after them 24h/365.

3. Carefully think about this weighing pros and cons. Remember you are 18. A pet shop means no popping off to London or festivals at a whim, you WILL ALWAYS HAVE TO PREPARE, WAY IN ADVANCE.

4.If you open say a bookstore and you buy a book that isn't selling too well, it sits on the shell. If you by a fish that isn't selling too well, you still need to feed it, clean the tank and keep it healthy, that all costs money. Your store is chewing money at ALL times as there is no such thing as the store is closed. The pumps are running 24/7.

5. I think it is great you are asking these questions and I think you should go for it (one day at least). I am by no means trying to discourage you guys, just playing devil's advocate with regards to restraints.

Just my 2 cents mate.

No, I've heard that fish store owners don't make much money, if you don't care about money and just want to do something you love then I would go for it.

not now. go to school, get a degree, then do the shop and if it falls through then you can get another job with the degree you have.
