SO i recenlty purchased a red severum. He seems to hide alot in one of the cave structures i have setup in the tank. Is this normal, he has only been in the tank for 2 1/2 days so could it just be an adjustment period? He is in the tank with a geophagus maybe 3in and leukamani about 3.5in. The sev himself is about 4-5in.

Also what do you find they like the best as far as food.

Thanks from a new member

Hi and welcome to the forum Brian. I'll move this to the cichlid section, where you should get some better answers!

Probably just cause he is getting settled in. My 2 sevs when I first got them did the same. Feed him flakes, shrimp, pellets, and crill.

i feed mine omega one super veggie flakes 3x a day, tubifex worms every 3 days, with freezedried shrimp every other day, and frozen food ( variety) every day i dont feed the freezedried.

Hey guys thanks for the response. He sure has no problem coming out when its feeding time thats for sure. I'll give him some time and let him settle in. Thanks again.

If your tank has sun light coming through it then the cause of him/her hiding could well be the shadow caused when approaching the tank. I this is the case then try coming towards the tank from a kneeling position. Sounds stupid i know but i have this very problem and i've known a few other people to have the same problem aswell. Also if there isn't that many fish in the tank then they're quite a shy fish, if other fish are housed in the tank and they slightly shoal together the sev will come out as much as the other fish are, strength in numbers,. Might not work for you but it has for me and others aswell. Good luck

Thanks for the advice. He seems to be pretty adjusted to me already. When I come home from work and come in the room he pokes his head out knowing he is about be fed. Lastnight I just had the tank light on and got him to take tubifex worms from my fingers which was pretty cool. Its such a pretty fish I would love him to come out more but if he's happy in there so be it, sonner or later he'll come around.
