My wife works for Sears as a cashier.

Yesterday, she was given an ultimatum: what it basically dwindles down to is if she doesn't get enough credit applications within the next week, she is going to be terminated from her job.

Now, just to let you know, the way Sears does it is based on an APO score, or, Apps Per Opportunity. It isn't that she doesn't get any, she has opened about 9 accounts the past month, it's that she doesn't get enough. Who are they to say how many customers should open cards? Aren't people in charge of what they do with their lives, and therefore their credit? If someone has a purchase of $1.99 and already owns both the regular Sears and the Sears Mastercard, but chooses to NOT use those cards for the $1.99, it counts as my wife not getting a credit application. Mind you, in that scenario, which happens often, she had NO opportunity to open an account, as the customer already had them!!!

It is right before the holidays. We have a little girl who will turn 4 shortly after christmas.

I just want everyone to be aware that when shopping retail, if you don't use a credit card with a HIGH interest rate for a $2 purchase, people lose their jobs.

If she is required to open x amount of accounts, she should be paid a commission on top of her salary for her performance.

from what i understand sears has reported loss of earnings for the last few quarters. the way the economy is going we'll be lucky if any of us have jobs .im still trying to pay sears for the 47 inch lcd i got last year .no more cards for me for a while.

Thats bs she has no control over who wants a new credit card. I would tell her to find another job before the store goes under.

Sears hires non quality people (other than your wife) I have seen some of the most ridiculous people work there, that didn't understand how to run a sears gift card, let alone be able to process an application.

Tell your wife to ditch that job if she is able to, and to find another one hopefully.

It sounds like they are forcing her to resign...which may be the case.

That is serioulsy screwed up dude! Credit cards are the evil of the world and the CC companies are unethical POS. They prey on people who cant make minimum payments or carry high balances. She should go to the local news with that threat and see what happens.

Sadly, thats what its like when your an "at-will" employee. You can be let go at anytime for any reason.

I don't think credit cards are evil. Read the fine print when you get the card. If you wont be able to keep up with the interest, DON'T GET THE CARD! They don't hold you at gun point while you sign up for and then max out the card, now if you do end up doing this, sure, they take advantage of you, but they don't put you in the situation.

I do think this is ridiculous though. If she wasn't trying to get people to sign up for the cards, that's one thing, but if she asks and everyone says no, there isn't anything she can do about it. Luckily, all the gimmicks like that at my job are we get $X for each Y item we sell during the promotional period. We have a quota, but all that generally happens is the manager makes fun of us (jokingly) if we don't reach it. Of course, I was the new employee with the really low quota that I normally doubled lol.
If I had that Sears job, I would have put in my two weeks notice as soon as that conversation took place. Of course, I'm a poor college kid who doesn't make that much money or have that great of a need for money as I'm currently just racking up loans that basically support me for the next 3 years, then I need money. I'm sure your wife isn't in the position to do that until she has for sure found another job though-which isn't an easy task these days

i've always hated sears. they suck

I actually for some reason applied to work there once.

I was being interviewed by a squeeky teenager that looked like she just rolled out of bed.

I was discusted. This is who is running sears.
