I would say they're some sort of carpintis. Possibly a hybrid because one of them has a very long dorsal and anal fin similar to a red texas or flowerhorn. They appear to be 2 females because they have a black mark in their dorsal.

Two females??

All i needed :(:(

If they are hybrids, the black markings don't mean anything. I had a male blood parrot x carpintis with black markings. Take them out and vent them to be sure.

They were passed on to me as pure......:(

Can ayome remind me of the venting process ans results?

Imdo not have to squeeze the fish, do i?

They are not hybrids ! These are pure escondido or vontehillo without a doubt, black spot on the dorsal means nothing for carpintis, I have 3 males and 2 females (all adults) and they all have the black spot on the dorsal, that's an accurate way to sex texas cichlids but not these, as far as them being a pair you would have to vent them to be sure.

They were passed on to me as Escondidos, in fact.

I am not an experienced venter. Do i have to squeeze the fish?:(

You don't have to squeeze them. As long as they're at least 4" you shouldn't have a problem venting them. I'm a total noob at venting and I got all mine right the first time I tried. I have a thread with some pics if you want some for reference.
