I have a lot of little toads in my yard right now. They are either americans or some other common species. About an hour ago my dad hit one with a weed wacker. One of its front legs appears to be broken. The wound was deep enough to bleed and I might have been able to see bone. It is twisted, at times, in an unnatural position. The leg is still attached pretty well though. He was stunned at first, but now is alert acting and active. He is a little bigger than a quarter.
I put him in a container with some potting soil first. Dirt got in the wound, so I cleaned the wound with water and switched to paper towels(slightly damp) as substrate.
What should I do? Should I put anything like peroxide or an antibiotic on the wound? Would he better off if I let him go? If I keep him, is it safe to use fish conditioner(prime, etc) on his water to remove the chlorine and chloramine? My house is about 72 degrees, will the toad need to be heated. Ill check the temp in my garage
I've keep european green toads in the past, but that was over 5 years ago. I think I remember keeping them moist. I'm not sure if american toads like moisture as much as europeans. what kind of moisture would you recommend?
Unless he is traumatized by his injury and captivity, I don't expect feeding to be difficult. I've actually fed toads in my garden before(dropping pillbugs and worms in front of them).I know my europeans would bite anying that moved, sometimes including my fingers. Would small pillbugs work well as food for the time being? I don't think the petshops in my area sell pinhead crickets.
I'm going to check into what species he is now.
