I wanted to try something different. SO instead of firing up the flash I just put the camera on a tripod and shot available light. Most of the shots were done manually at an aperture of around 11 - 15. The shutter speed for some of the shots were two seconds, but the bulk were about a second. What I was hoping for was one fish stationary and in focus...the others in motion blur. ONe of the things I noticed is that when I stood in front of the tank they would line up...only for a little while...but long enough to try for the shot.
Normally I don't like the head on shots...but I thought this was interesting. The head is in focus...more or less...and the caudal and other fins are in motion.
Here'e the only one that was crisp...more or less. It's a female that is in breeding dress. There's really a drastic difference in the yellow illumination of the breeding and NONbreeding fish.
Anticipation of food. I can get them all heads up just by putting my hand over the top of the tank for a brief second.
The rest look like this. I'm not sure if I like them or not. Any comments are appreciated.
Exit...stage right:
This one was one of the longer exposures. Not sure where the prism flare came from...but I left it in. THis fish was hanging near the top of the tank near the outtake of the filter. If you look to the right you can see the small bubbles that were in motion. They looked like little theads. The photo looks much better (IMHO) in a higher resolution.
Blur...in motion:
I shot about a hundred photos. Enough to encourage me to try again.
Here's my favorite...and it's a cheap filter trick.
FIsh in plastic.
Two of the Zonatum...with flash:
