This video shows some of the "fishy foreplay" that goes on prior to the actual breeding. Note the head shaking at the end of the video. It's been thought that the fish is actually making a noise that can be heard by their partner.

A few times in the video you can see the females head twitch hard once...like a quick pop. I have observed a variety of CA cichlids doing this same behavior when they are in a highly agitated state. It seems to have the same play during the breeding process.

What I have noted is that there are certain little idiosyncrasies that go on time and again that must stimulate either partner as the process continues. Some you see, like the jaw locking. Others you have to watch closely to see.
