I like these fish, but the males don't look that much different from loisellei I've seen pictures of. Great pics of the fish, as usual. What do you think of the colors Mo? I've seen some posted pics of the wild-caught fish and they look kinda cool, but other pics of the wild-caughts look normal.

you should publish fish books with these pics.... they are beautiful

When they go into breeding coloration they look entirely different. I have two F0 fish in the pond from the first trip...both over 8" in length. They look a lot more like the "non-breeding" coloration posted above. Most of the Loiselle pictures I have seen have had a salmon colored strip across the top of the back like these...they also have a higher body and upturned mouth:

Juan Miquel seems to think that the fish is a Fredrichsthali. According to Bussing, Loiselle do extend down as far as La Cieba. But according to Juan, they look very different from any Loiselle he has seen. He plans on doing some further a research according to Bussing's description to see if it fits in some way.

Rusty and I have been conversing on the fish for a couple weeks. I send him updated photos as I get them. Here's some observations in comparing them to Freddies:

· The Loiselle has a light band of color around the cheek stripe and blotch on the operculum. Freddie doesn’t
· The head shape on the loiselle has a slight dip on the snout. The Freddie is more rounded.
· Loiselle’s body is more compact in the females…higher body. The Freddies are more stream lined.
· Male Loiselle has much more visible horizontal lines than the male Freddie

Rusty responded that in addition he sees that the Freddies have a more spotted pattern while the Loielle's do not. He also felt that the operculum spot made them different. The fish wasn't a new discovery. There's documented proof that Michael Martin (1970) and Socolof, Wessel and Specht (1989) collected the fish long before we brought it back. I made this comparison photo for Juan and Rusty a while back, but never posted it. Since I have a few "flavors" of Freddies as well as the Loiselle, it made an interesting photo comparison.
