My F0 pair of managuense from Honduras are sitting on eggs again. During the initial "phase" of the breeding the female will rarely leave the site, instead fanning them continuously. You can see which of the eggs are not fertile in the photo. It's not unusual to find some of the eggs unfertilized. The pair will eat them shortly after the rest are born.

As you might imagine, both of the fish are very aggressive during this period. I used this state of aggression to get a desired effect for a photo. While the female sits on the eggs, the male does overtime protecting the perimeter from threats...like ME with my camera. Whenever I would put my finger on the glass or approached with the lens, the male would go into a frenzy. The female would also flare.

After a few seconds she would turn her aggression to the male. I speculate that they do this just to keep their edge...keeping an eye on the task at hand. Over the years I have been able to take many similar photos....and in fact have several like this from the session.

But here's the photo I wanted. These last two were taken with the camera on multiple exposure and flash. The male, while doing his job keeping ME away from the glass, gets blind sided by the female.
