I have three F0 A. hogaboomorum in a 180 gallon tank. In order to "give them something to hate" I placed a small 7" P. synspilus into the tank as a target fish. It'e really worked out quite well. The breeding pair remains on the right and the odd male on the left...with the synspilus. Tthis synspilus has spent his life in a tank being the target of other fish aggression. If you follow my threads you might recall me making mention of the fish in the tank with the large P. zonatus. The fish went from there to the pond...and from the pond to the 180 with the hogaboomorum.
To be honest, the fish was never in great condition...one of the reasons she (it's a female) has taken on the current role of target fish. The hogaboomorum breed regularly with the odd male left out. Well, recently he has been courting the female synspilum.
And here's "Pugsly"...my niece named her..not me. She has a large chunk missing from her dorsal fin, torn pectoral fins...busted up nose...scarred operculum. She's been in pretty much the same condition all of her life and really does quite well in the tank currently.
She hasn't laid eggs yet, but the pre spawning signs are already there.

Goes to prove you don't have to be perfect to be beautiful
