I spent some time going through photos this weekend preparing for an upcoming presentation. I ran across some interesting macro photos of developing managuense fry. There are two different photo sessions. in the first, all of the fry were just over an eighth of an inch. At that size you can see their internal organs....their chromatophores forming that will later be the basis of their color and pattern. Also interesting was the size of their eyes in proportion to the rest of their body. You could only speculate that with the survival of the fittest, one of the most important things would be the ability to see.
The second set of photos the fry were about twice the size....or a quarter inch. A little more complete in color and pattern.
For those interested, the photos were taken in a very small photo tank that I had made. Three Nikon SB910 flash units were on the tank. This gave me maximum light and the ability to shoot at a very low ISO (25) and tight aperture (45) that gave me maximum depth of field. I inserted a moveable wall that I was able to further shorten the distance to the front of the tank. This limited the movement of the fry. The camera was set on a focus rail.
