My big male jag has been a psycho for a long time. I've brought him back from the light several times. Well his 125 isn't drilled and I haven't finished the basement like I thought.

He broke his aqueon pro heater and I had a temp one in to get him by since it's been colder down stairs. Well numb nuts shattering that thing somewhere between last night and about 7 this evening.

The water was electrified. He popped his left eye flat and I guess glass shards shredded his face. I don't know if I can bring him back this time. Clean water and prayer. I knew it was a matter of time.

Agreed.

With large CA cichlids I always recommend protecting the heaters if they have to be in the tank. For my last male umbee I drilled holes in PVC and siliconed the heater inside of it, certainly wasn’t the prettiest but prevented my guy from busting it.

That’s a great idea!

I don’t use heaters at all in my tanks. Even a new heater can malfunction and do the same. Luckily my tanks don’t get that cold. In fact I fight high temps more then low.

I had a dragon blood peacock that laid against the heater during a round of ick treatment. He died the next day.
I took a scrap piece of ABS pipe and split it length wide down one side, then drilled a metric butt-load of 1/2" holes all around it.
With the split, I could just open it up and slide it over my suction cups for the heater. Definitely not pretty, but very effective (and blends into my black background....kind of!).

Here's an older pic where you can see it.

The aqueon pros usually hold up pretty good. The glass spare was in maybe a day. He has these psycho everything must die episodes every few months I guess yesterday was the day. He broke his tank top not long ago knocking his lights in.

I'm done with non drilled tanks and big fish. Its getting drilled with a sump and the top is going to be clear corrugated plastic.

He's still hanging in there and will glass bang if he sees you with his right eye. Looks like I took a little cheese grader to his forehead. Laying on the bottom a good bit which is out of the norm but can swim around.

Change another 50% when I get home.

This probably sounds like a stupid question, but, has anyone ever tried putting in a plastic fish for these super aggressive fish to beat up on?
I'm just thinking of like a punching bag in prison; gives em something to get their aggression out on.

Hope he heals up for you, PYRU. He will look street tough for sure!
