I was in the sting ray forum but they sent me here. I geuss it is appropiate since this is the first tank I have owned but I do want a couple rays (freshwater). So I have a 210G (72x24x30) glass tank with dual overflows. I am running a trickle filter with about 1700GPH of circulation. The tank is about cycled. Nitrites on the decline. I have 6 African cichlids, a pleco, and a green terror. Is anyone using Co2 to control their PH?

Nice to see someone that appreciates the quality of order. I have never used CO2 to control pH, I would think it would be too difficult to regulate. Again, welcome, and good luck with your new tank!

Form what i have put together, I can get a PH monitor/controller. Then set the PH I want my tank at and the controller will power a solenoid on the Co2 regulator to allow the flow of Co2 through a bubble counter. This would only be able to lower Ph from what I understand. But aireation (sp) raises PH by displacing the Co2. It seems like it might work but I don't want to invest in something I am unsure about. Only considering it because for ray I need to be at 6.25PH and currently my tank is running at 8.0.

Have you tried adding driftwood? This might lower pH, but maybe not to the level you are talking about.

One large piece (12 inch) in a 210G tank. I was told that if Ikeep using a PH down with buffer I would eventually be able to stop using the buffer but it seems like that wouldn't be true because of water changes. ?

No that wouldn't be true, and using pH adjusters is dangerous, especially with fish in the tank.

That's what I have understood from reading. That is why I got on this C02 thing. I strarted reading about planted tanks and they were using Co2 for the plants but warning that it will lower the PH. So I started looking into it and that is how I got this idea. I know I need constant PH level. And for rays it seems to be a low PH. Any other ideas for keeping the PH that low without fluctuating?

peat moss in the filter.

dose your PH come out of the tap at 8.0 or do u have rocks and stuff like that in the tank

Fluval sells Peat pellets and peat fiber, both will lower your pH, also Wood will lower your pH. I have about 100lbs in my tank, and it keeps water quality at around 6.7.

I have a few rocks and one piece of drift wood. I can't do too much wood b/c I am planning for rays. I will try some peat moss in the sump though. Can it be completely submerged? The water comes out of the tap pretty high. I think the other factor is the surface area and how much aeration I have.
