Just a few bad cell phone pics of this pair...
Male:
Female:
They are F1 from the Rio Culebra in the Golfito area of Costa Rica (I believe
).
Got them in a standard 90 gallon with 6 Amphilophus altifrons that are growing out. Sort of a small Costa Rican biotope based around that river... Got a species list from personal correspondence with Juan Miguel (can't just google this stuff, at least not unless you speak Spanish and your Google-Fu is better than mine).
Anyone who has kept these will know how freaking hard these guys are to photograph. ALWAYS MOVING! I don't know for sure, but it wouldn't surprise me if they spawned a few days ago in a cave in the back of the tank. The female won't leave the area and they are both in breeding dress. Don't want to disturb them by moving anything around. Maybe I'll just see a swarm of fry in a few days.
My tetracanthus are sitting on wigglers right now so it might just be that time.
