Hello: some particulars -
  • One 10" male, one 6" female: there is an extra 6" female in tank
  • Aqueon 180 gallon tank
  • Four box filters, one Mattenfilter, one Fx6 soon to be removed (going to all-air system)
  • Temperature: 70--73 degrees F
  • Tank decorated with 10" diameter flowerpots and 6"-10" chunks of marine base rock
  • Other fish include mix of young adult Vieja guttulata, Oscura heterospila, plus an adult pair of Amatitlania septemfasciata Limincito
  • 50% water changes every six days
  • Feed Northfin flake, dandelions, blueberries, krill

I had spawned them in similar conditions in 2020-2021 but collected no fry - my interest in fish hit a low at that point.

I suppose that the temperature range seems awfully cold to some but I have been keeping fish for over 40 years. It works for me - and the fish, too.

I pulled about 60 free-swimming fry last night, into a 40 for a fry tank.

Well done. Not the easiest cichlid to keep.
Doesn't surprise me about the cool water, they are often found in rapids areas.
One of my favorite genera.
I had three 8" males back in 2009.
combined then with a friends 10" female.
She quickly killed 2, then spawned with th 3rd.
Here she is with wrigglers.

If I remember right soon after spawning she killed the 3rd male.

Also had a pair of T asfaci back in 2013, one killed the other after spawning and the ate the eggs, I have the sneaking suspicion my tanks current was too week.
Also had former T sieboldi back in 2013, now genus Talamancaheros

Now in Panama, I'm trying to collect some wild ones, but no luck as of yet.

Found a number in the Rio Gariché just east of the border, in 2007. It was a fun spot to the river there, there was a little covered cantina right up the bank where we went to wet our whistles before and after we went into the water. We didn't enquire about crocs, though they probably weren't too far away. I saw an enormous one on the shore of the Rio Piedra, east of Colon, but we went into the water anyway. Fools, we were.
I last had Talamancaheros in 2020, they were underwoodi, descended from stock collected by Maxim Savchuk. Neat fish - I miss them. I bred them in a 135 when they were barely two inches long.
