I found a good deal on one of these filters recently and I am tempted to try it. Its primarily designed as a saltwater wet and dry but I would think I can use it on my fresh setup. I found it for the cost of an ac110 which I was going to use, I am hoping maybe I can remove the protein skimmer all together and use the chamber for scrubbies.

Let me know what you think or if anyone has used this setup in the past.

If you found it for the same cost as an AC110, then I say go for it. I don't have any experience with the unit but a cheap turn-key wet/dry that flows 700gph sounds like a good thing to me.

Like you said, removing the skimmer and adding scrubbies, bio-balls, biomax, or something of the likes, seems like the thing to do in a freshwater setup.

Let us know how it works out!
