It didn't even occur to me till i read the feedback from my last post

To save a lot of typing this is my current setup

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWbbY9QL8Mg&feature=channel

minus the peacock bass and one shark, i even removed the 2 skull ornaments. Did that for the stingray's

Now I have 2 fx5's and a eheim 2217 running and 2 of the hydor 4's.

do you think thats a lot of cirulation for having sand in a tank? I'm guessing its prolly flying around everywhere unnecessarily and getting into my canister/hydor's

I think my eheim is already clogged up but that might only be because the intake is like a 3 inches from the bottom

I'm looking for suggestion on what i can change in my setup apart for raising the intakes higher (which i will probably do tonight) as i think its effecting my canisters. Should i remove the hydors?

Please help!

as above agreed
i had finer sand in my tank and went threw everything got higher grand sand, no more problems

That was going to be my next question. How do i get the old sand out and put in the new one without killing my fish :-(

Not an easy task, and I defintiely don't recommend dumping new sand with the fish still in the tank.

Why not bring the intake on the Eheim up? At 3 inches from the bottom, make no wonder why it's sucking up sand.

The other option is to move the fish from the tank and do some landscaping. Easiest way to get the sand out, believe it or not, is to physically scoop it out, one bucket at a time. It's time consuming and laborious, so be prepared to do some work.

Dont mind the pyshical labor party, main concern is the amoonia spike i keep hearing about when removing/adding gravel or sand.

If your filters have enough bio you should be fine. The way I have gotten sand out in the past is straight syphoning it out and into a trash can outside of my house that way I can empty the water out and still have the sand. I add sand through a PVC down to the bottom. Hope that helps.

yeah i syphon mine out and then rinse the play sand i used very very well then start adding new sand

but what i also have done was half sand in a 5g bucket and half water lift if up on the top of the tank and syphon it out that way and add the sand since play sand normally just drops. adding sand is a pain tho unless you move it by hand around where you need it the most but thats adding little loads of sand at one time. In that tank your probably better off taking all the fish out and putting them in somthing they can chill in for a good hour or two so you can add the sand
