So I noticed in my whitewater tank my tat normally hides under the heater. For some reason after I left for 10 days he began hiding a lot more and stopped eating as aggressively.

When I shut off the filters to do a water change and start siphoning out the water, he starts to venture out. Him, my Nandus Nandus, Falcirostris and Juruense catfish all group together in the center of the tank. It's actually kind of strange.

By the time the tank is almost done filling he is swimming around with the falcirostris. Once everything is up and running again, they both go right back into hiding.

I have an aquaclear 50 powerhead on low hooked up to an aerator, an AC30 HOB filter and a hydor sponge filter rated for 40 gallons.

The powerhead creates a lot of current even on low and I am thinking it may be too much for the fish. Do tats like heavy whitewater kind of current or more of a clearwater current?

Payaras in general like a little bit of water current, too much can stress them. But tats are usually rather shy (especially small ones) and I wouldn't be surprised if it spent most of it's time hovering near some shelter. They do become much more active when it's dark.
