I have a 55 gallon tank that is "semi-planted". I want to be able see my fish in the morning before I go to work at 8am and also at night until 10 or 11 pm. Is there a problem having the lights on for 14-15 hours? Would it be better to have them shut off for 3 hours in the afternoon?

Really depends on what sort of lights you have, how far above the tank etc, but 14-15 hours is probably gonna mean green algae and may stress the fish - they need sleep as well!
You could try adding moonlights for the evenings (say 3 hours) they can give the tank a really nice look, especially if your room lighting is muted.

Put the lights on a timer. Run them for 4 hours in the morning and then another 4 in the evening. If you have to, when you're home on the weekend, leave them on for a continuous period. The period my lights are on varies from day to day, but is always around the 8 hour mark.

I would go the route of moonlighting. It just looks really cool.
