so i have a 22 inch duel t5 light with a flora sun and ultra sun t5 ho bulbs, and now im getting lots a green hair algae, ive never had this issue before, and im getting really frustraighted with my planted tank, i fill it with hardy and easy plants and they just dont do well, so any advice is good

Established algae will out-compete your plants every time. Try a thorough cleaning of the spots with algae, do a large water change, add a heavy dose of Flourish excel (known to choke out algae), and try a shorter photo-period.

^ While Excel has been known to work with killing off algae, its not always a sure fire method...

Best bet is to obviously work out where the problem is... is it too much light, too much ferts, maybe high phosphates etc...

Also, what stock do you have in your tank at the moment? since some shrimp can be very sensitive to Excel... infact, i've lost a few which i'm sure was from dosing a bit too much excel when trying to rid my tank of algae before as well...

Another question is, what is your tank setup like? what type of filtration you running? whats in the tank? do you run Pressurized Co2? How long are the lights on etc? the more info you give us, the better the chance we can try and help you solve your problem...

Not nearly enough info as homer pointed out, most importantly your light cycle. How many hours per day are your lights on? Do you use a timer? I fixed my algae bloom just by cutting back 2 hours a day... After the plants filled in I was able to add those two hours back to keep up with growth and enjoy my fish longer in a day. I use the same lights as you by the way.

its probibly duration and how much light, being an aquatics specialist youd think i would get this sooner, anyway the light is not on a timer so its not on any real schedual which is also not helping, i raised the loght about 4 or 5 inches abouve the tank and i will have the light for 8 hours

Are you running any form of Co2 in the tank? Coz an 8 hour lighting period with T5-HO lighting could be your problem, especially with no Co2...

i was using a home made co2 for awhile, but i saw no changes in my plants growth or health, im only growing java moss java fern, anubius, and a couple plants from a bulb pack.

+1

I'm still new to the game but higher light needs more fertz and co2! Tweaking the 3 major factors takes patience but once you get it right you will enjoy the results.

Do post a pic!

I have seen HO t5 fixtures work very well in planted tanks with or without CO2. I feel like we know very little about your system though. How long has the tank been set up? What light did you have before? What organisms are in the tank? With algae I always look for issues other than the light because in a balanced tank light usually shouldn't cause a huge algae bloom.

And the really important question is what type of algae do you have? "Hair algae" comes in a number of forms. Is it thin, filamentous, and clustered in little balls? Or growing off your plants in long strands? Or do you think that you have black beard algae?

Provide a pic so we can help!
