Hey everybody, I have a 20 gallon saltwater tank and I'm looking to get a protein skimmer for it that is a lot more than it needs, I was planning on getting the coralife super skimmer rated for 125 gallons but I looked on amazon and the larger skimmer that's rated for 220 gallons is only 20$ more so what I'm wondering is is that too much skimming or is it ok? Let me know what you guys think.

If i dont skim for a few days my corals start to close. I would say yes a skimmer rated for 220 on a 20 gal is WAY overkill

I skim very heavy. I had a 250g skimmer on a 50g and my corals loved it. Just don't upgrade a skimmer when you have an establishe system. Stripping the water of nutrients too fast will freak out the system. So if you had a new system you could put a huge skimmer on it. This is the same reason not to replace all your carbon at once. You want to do it gradually not to shock the system. If your over skimmed it allows you to feed heavier. I have 40 fish in my 200g system and I feed 3 times a day. You just have to check your phosphates. I make my own food to assure its low in phosphates. Flakes are high in phosphates

220 rated skimmer on a 20g tank?..... lol wut..... Unless you're planning on getting a bigger tank in the future i wouldnt spend the money it costs to buy a 220g sized skimmer. Just go with like a 50g rated one.
