I'm a bit confused on what your saying about sodium being replaced with calcium? You got it backwards...

I found a site, it states:

hardness minerals aren’t removed, but “exchanged” for sodium. Softened water has an elevated sodium content

http://www.pwgazette.com/softeners.htm

The elevated sodium content should be ok (as some aquarists add table salt (NaCl) to their tank water; disease treatment and preventive). If your able to drink it, they should be ok in it.

I personally believe well water is fine. I currently use well water in all my tanks (pH 8, hardiness medium). I have cichlids and they love it! PLUS no dechlor needed!

Good luck!!!:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2
